March 2024

Dear colleague,

This month we have some exciting news to share with you!

After the first designation period from 2021-2024, all 87 TSH's had to reapply for this status for the next designation period of 2024-2028.

After a rigorous application process, I am delighted to inform you that we have been successful and secured designation as your local TSH.

We are thrilled to be able to continue our work of supporting schools, settings and colleagues from across our region and look forward to the next 4 years.

In this month's newsletter, we want to draw your attention to:

Initial Teacher Training (ITT)

We are sharing a range of routes to teaching - have you considered teacher apprenticeships? As a partner with Best Practice Network for teaching apprenticeships, you will find further information about postgraduate and undergraduate apprenticeships.

There is also information on how you can be involved with the DfE in helping shape a new service that allows schools to record their capability to host trainees.

National Professional Qualifications

It is a quiet time for NPQ recruitment until we receive further information from the DfE regarding next year's NPQ offer. The first sessions have just begun for the final cohort of this academic year.

This month you will find information about our participants' pass rate to date, alongside information about NPQSENCo, which is scheduled to commence in October 2024.

ECF

You can find out what has changed in the updated Core Content and Early Career Framework. You can also find information about the DfE's year 2 evaluation of the Early Career Framework rollout.

Finally.....

In this month's spotlight, we have information about Forge CPD's free professional development portal. In our coffee break section, you can read the Sutton Trust's document on 'Closing the Attainment Gap'.

Kind regards,

Alan and the Potentia Team

Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships

{item_alt_tag}

Would you like to find out more about the postgraduate apprenticeship route into teaching?

We are working with Best Practice Network (BPN) to offer this route. BPN apprenticeships are available for both primary and secondary schools.

A teaching apprenticeship enables you to access the Apprenticeship Levy to upskill a current member of staff or to recruit a new member of staff.

To watch a short recording about how BPN can support schools in our region click here.

More information is also available here:

Primary ITT Apprenticeship

Secondary ITT Apprenticeship

Undergraduate Teaching Apprenticeships

You may have seen the recent announcement of the teacher degree apprenticeship from the Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan MP. Subject to final approval, schools will be able to start recruiting apprentices from September 2024, with the first trainees beginning the programme in 2025. A pilot scheme working with a small number of schools to fund up to 150 apprentices to teach maths in secondary schools will start later this year.

More information will be available soon. For now, this blog from The Education Hub has some initial questions and answers.

ITT School Engagement National Survey

We are currently contacting all schools in our region to invite school leaders to complete this survey. We have been directed by the DfE to deliver new strategic roles to support local ITT delivery ahead of the reforms in September 2024. This survey is an opportunity for you to support us to:

  • Understand the local ITT market, context and challenges
  • Facilitate school engagement in ITT

It is also an opportunity for you to express an interest in supporting school placements in 2024-25.

The survey will only take between 5-8 minutes to complete. Your contributions are invaluable to gain an accurate and complete picture of ITT provision in our region.

Here is the link: Initial Teacher Training School Engagement National Survey

Research with schools that host placements and ITT providers

The DfE is developing a new service that allows schools to record their capability to host trainees. The service is being designed to help ITT providers and placement schools identify partnership opportunities more efficiently. DfE colleagues are looking for research participants that are representatives from schools that host placements and provide mentors for trainee teachers.

The research sessions will take place across February to April and involve a 1 hour video call using Microsoft Teams. Sessions will be scheduled at times that work for your availability and work patterns. To participate in the research, please contact: robert.kettrick@education.gov.uk

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)

Since delivering the new suite of NPQs, which began in October 2021, we have the following to share with you;

{item_alt_tag}

We are immensely proud of our pass rate across the entire suite of NPQs. This is a result of the fantastic skilled facilitation, hard work by the participants and support from the Potentia team.

We are currently running NPQH, NPQSL, NPQLBC, NPQLL, NPQLT, NPQLTD and NPQLPM. This is the first time that we have run 7 NPQs at one time and we are delighted that so many people have taken advantage of the last fully funded round that is guaranteed. We have also welcomed three new facilitators to the team.

The Future of Funding and Delivery for NPQs from October 2024

NPQs have been fully funded for people who meet the eligibility criteria and work in state-funded schools, academies and organisations that offer age 16 to 19 places in England. The 2023/24 academic year is currently the last time this funding is guaranteed by the Department for Education (DfE).

Whilst there has been no confirmation about funding from October 2024 onwards, the DfE have confirmed that from the 2024-25 academic year, NPQ cohorts will start in October and April, rather than in October and February.

NPQSENCo - Mandatory for some, applicable for all

The DfE are continuing to expand the suite of NPQs, which will include a leadership level NPQ for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators from October 2024. It is a qualification for SENCos but is relevant for anyone in leadership.

As announced in the SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement Plan, the new NPQ for SENCos will replace the existing National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) as the mandatory qualification for SENCOs from Autumn 2024.

{item_alt_tag}

Teaching of the NPQ for SENCOs will commence in Autumn 2024. Further information on what this means for schools and SENCOs is available here. The content framework which underpins the qualification and outlines what participants should know and be able to do after completing the NPQSENCO, can be viewed here.

Year 2 DfE Evaluation of Early Career Framework Roll - Out

On 28th February, the DfE published the year 2 Evaluation of the national roll-out of the Early Career Framework induction programmes. This evaluation contains an analysis of ECT and mentors experiences through the first cohort of ECF trainees. To find out more, click here.

{item_alt_tag}

Initial findings within the report suggest:

  • ECTs were mostly positive about their training. Mentors and Induction Tutors also rated the training for ECTs positively.
  • ECTs continued to feel very supported by their Mentors and were confident in their Mentors’ abilities.
  • ECT and Mentor confidence increased over the course of the programme.
  • Participants felt the ECF-based induction programme built on and extended topics covered in ECTs’ ITT.
  • Participants rated communications from providers positively.
  • Towards the end of the first complete induction period, most schools intended to continue with the provider-led approach and their current lead provider.
  • There are also some findings which are less positive, including workload pressures and a lack of tailoring to school contexts.
